CHAPTER ELEVEN

Never forget where you’ve been. Never lose sight of where you’re going. And never take for granted the people who travel the journey with you.

“Is it supposed to be warm today?” I called from the bathroom.

“Low seventies. Not bad. But we’ll be by the water, and you are freezing all the time so maybe grab a sweater.”

I adjusted a loose strand of hair and considered shaving. Only a day’s worth of stubble covered my chin, since I’d shaved for my interview the previous day. I decided to leave it and exited the bathroom to find Trystain packing some snacks in a small cooler.

Joining him at the counter, he slid me a coffee and a plate of toast.

“Eat.”

I stifled a chuckle and picked up my mug for a sip. He was so insistent on feeding me all the time. Had he been anyone else, the obsession might have bordered on annoying, except, as with many things, it was different with Trystain, and I found his mothering almost cute and tried hard to humor him.

I bit a large piece of peanut butter toast and watched as he cleaned grapes and filled a container.

“What time is Blake coming to get us?” I asked around a second mouthful.

He dashed a glance to the time on the stove. “About fifteen minutes.”

I’d never asked him why he didn’t own a car and drive for himself, and since learning of his accident, I assumed I knew the answer and didn’t want to chance bringing up an awkward conversation.

He pulled a few cans of soda from the fridge and added them to our lunch. Making a mental tally, he then zipped it up and slung the strap over his shoulder.

He wore faded jeans and a grey t-shirt which fit snug around his decorated, tanned arms. I tried not to stare, but it was becoming increasingly more difficult as the days passed—especially since I still hadn’t decided where he stood.

Before he moved to the living room, he caught my eye and we shared another awkward moment before he dipped his head and shot off to put more things together for our day. It was one of about a dozen since the previous night.

Telling him about Donny and the club had left me feeling vulnerable. I hadn’t told him up until that point because I feared he would judge my mental state of mind, and I was just beginning to feel like it was more in my control.

I finished off one piece of toast and left the second, taking my coffee into the living room and sitting on the couch. “Where are we going?”

“Blake said he knows of a little secluded lake about thirty minutes from here where we won’t make fools of ourselves. Unless you’ve retained all your fishing knowledge from when you were a kid. I fear we’d be a sight to see, the pair of us. Best we avoid the crowded piers.”

“Good call.”
